2016 BigWigs Raise More Than $32,000

This October, nine community and business leaders from North Texas proved that they are More Than Pink™ by collectively raising more than $32,000 for Susan G. Komen® North Texas through its annual BigWigs program.

The BigWigs campaign engages local corporate and community leaders as representatives in the fight against breast cancer. During the campaign running from September 15 through October 31, each BigWig committed to raising a minimum of $1,000.  They each rose to the challenge, and our top fundraising BigWig was Barb Barton Weiszhaar, the Head of Tax at HP Inc.  The other BigWigs this year were Jason Graziani from PHP Agency, Telvin Jeffries from Careergistics, Kathy Jumper from InTouch Credit Union, Pamela Mims from Cambria Hotel & Suites, John Palms from Bibbentuckers LLC, Stephanie Roberts from Morgan Stanley, Paul Sander from Strasburger & Price LLC, and Rusty Smith from Neiman Marcus Willow Bend.

The money raised by the BigWigs will be invested in Susan G. Komen’s mission to ensure quality and timely breast health care for all and support national research to prevent and cure breast cancer. This past September, Komen announced its bold goal to reduce current breast cancer deaths in the United States by 50% during the next decade.  Although we have made much progress, more than 40,000 women and men continue to die from this disease annually.  Currently, as part of our bold gold, Komen is working aggressively to find cures. This year, Komen National has invested more than $33 million in 86 research projects, 44% of which are focused on metastatic research to understand and ultimately prevent the breast cancer that kills.

In our North Texas community the need is greater than ever. More than 50% of our local population is medically underserved, many do not have health insurance and there is a lack of county hospitals in our area. Three people die of breast cancer a week, which is unacceptable. Because of the money that our BigWigs have raised, Komen North Texas can continue to educate our community about breast health, help them to access diagnostics and treatments regardless of their ability to pay, and invest in the research that will ultimately find the cures for breast cancer.

Thank you again to our 2016 BigWigs, and thank you to each donor who supported their campaigns.
